No, you don't need to be a ballerina or have any prior dance experience! Ballet Beautiful was founded by professional ballerina Mary Helen Bowers, a member of the New York City ballet for 10 years. We have always been intimidated to try this class at the NY studio (because who isn't intimidated by the strength of professional dancers!), but after learning that they had a vast on demand library with over 200 videos and live zoom classes, some with none other than Mary Helen herself, we decided to give it a try.
The workouts target specific muscle groups, and sculpt long, lean muscles in the legs and butt, core and arms. Don't be fooled by the low impact repetitive movements because trust us, 2 minutes in and your muscles will be burning. Although there is some ballet lingo in the videos, there are plenty of tutorials master each move. All of the workouts begin with a quick stretch, followed by repetitive toning movements on each side and stretches in between and then ending with a quick stretch.
In terms of the library, there are videos ranging from 2 minute tutorials to 64 minutes and some that are more professionally shot than others. The website is slightly confusing to navigate so you will have to spend some time on it to figure out where the videos are located. The music is background classical ballet music, so if you are looking for something loud and upbeat, this isn't for you. Although the music is very light, you can clearly hear Mary Helen in the videos and her instructions are always very clear.
Average Class Difficulty
7Cardio
5 to 60 minute full body work out, mixed with jumps, bar lifts, plies and piques.
Abs
3 to 30 minute abs, mat and standing. Again, don't be fooled by the "easy" movements, they all burn.
Arms
A combination of seated and standing quick 12 to 15 minute arm workouts. If you don't have weights, there are plenty of others you can try out without.
